This category contains analyses about sexual activity, substance use, mental health, and medication adherence in youth who were exposed to HIV and ARVs at birth, as well as the factors associated with these behaviors. We study sexually transmitted infections (STIs), reproductive health outcomes (such as pregnancy), and the transition to adulthood and adult health care as our participants become young adults.

In this category, you will find studies about the growth, development and well-being of children and teenagers with HIV infection or HIV-exposure over time. We are interested in whether the virus or its treatments affect youth’s brain development, learning, emotions or behavior. We also want to understand what role a child’s environment can play in helping or slowing development after HIV- exposure or infection.  

This category contains analyses about hearing and language abilities of children and teenagers with HIV infection or HIV-exposure over time. We are interested in how these abilities change and develop over time, whether the children meet age expectations for language acquisition, and what role a child’s environment can play in helping or slowing hearing and language acquisition after HIV-exposure or infection.

This category contains analyses about heart and lung function in children born to mothers with HIV.  We are interested in evaluating the safety of ARV treatment given to pregnant mothers with HIV on the heart and lung health of their children. This category has analyses about factors that might predict higher levels of biological signals of heart disease. It also looks at echocardiographic measures of heart function and structure, as well as lung function tests of children born to mothers with HIV.

In this category, you will find analyses about the long-term effects of HIV and anti-HIV medications. We focus on different parts of the body such as the kidneys, liver, and mouth, including teeth and gums. We are also interested in understanding the best way to manage anti-HIV medications as children with HIV grow up. Youth in our study have been exposed to many anti-HIV medications in their life, and they may experience challenges that may affect their ability to take medications.

This category contains analyses about factors and events that occur during pregnancy that may affect the baby. We are interested in seeing if pregnancy outcomes are associated with specific findings or events during pregnancy such as the use of specific ARV drugs, smoking or alcohol use, and severity of the mother’s HIV disease. From these studies, we will find out how frequently adverse outcomes occur. We will develop an understanding of why they happen so we can reduce their occurrence.

Here you will find studies about growth, nutrition and metabolic diseases in HIV-infected and HIV-exposed children, adolescents and young adults. We study the effects of HIV and anti-HIV medications on changes over time in height and weight, bone development, pre-diabetes, fats in the blood, and how the cells make energy for the body.

This category contains studies about the health and well-being of reproductive aged women living with or affected by HIV. Examples include studies examining trends in ART prescribing patterns for pregnant women, determinants of viral suppression and CD4 in repeat pregnancies, substance use in pregnancy and in the postpartum period, associations of ART with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and relationship of antiretroviral treatment (ART) to weight gain during pregnancy and postpartum.
