PHACS Role
Co-Chair, Hearing and Language Task Force
Dr. Peter Torre III, PhD, MS is the hearing scientist for the Pediatric HIV/AIDS Cohort Study (PHACS). He has overseen all hearing testing for PHACS since March 2009. His area of focus within PHACS is to extensively evaluate the hearing sensitivity characteristics of youth perinatally human immunodeficiency virus infected (PHIV) and HIV-exposed but uninfected (PHEU). From PHACS AMP data, it was reported that there was an association between HIV infection and exposure with hearing loss in children. His experience in PHACS has led to a separate study, Auditory Research in Children with HIV: Cape Town (ARCH: Cape Town). The primary objective of ARCH: Cape Town is to evaluate hearing loss in children with PHIV, PHEU, and children who are unexposed to HIV. Along with these hearing data, neurodevelopmental data and magnetic resonance imaging data of auditory structures from the cochlea to the cortex. This study will also provide the unique opportunity to examine essentially the entire auditory system in these children within one research protocol. The results from Dr. Torre's involvement in PHACS and ARCH: Cape Town will further contribute to research specific to the association of HIV and HIV exposure on the auditory system.
